Kings of Leon, MGMT, Drake, Silversun Pickups and Asher Roth will compete for the coveted Woodie of the Year award at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards, a ceremony celebrating the artists that rocked campuses across the country the past two semesters. Voting for categories ranging from Breaking Woodie to Left Field Woodie to Best Video Woodie is up now over at the mtvU site. The ceremony itself will take place December 4th at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, which has hosted the show for six consecutive years.

Passion Pit, Wale and, strangely, Grizzly Bear are all included in the Breaking category, even though Grizzly Bear released their third album Vecktimest while the other bands are rookies. Over in Best Video, the category boasting the most marquee names, Dead Weather, Death Cab for Cutie and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will duke it out against underdogs Kid Cudi, Matt & Kim and Anjulie. There’s even a category honoring a band’s live performances, with Green Day notably facing off against Animal Collective and others.
Since this is a celebration of what’s big on dorm-room stereos, you can also vote on the College Radio Woodie Award. For the rest of this year’s Woodie nominees, check out the list below:
