Rolling Stone revisits the best music of the decade in our new issue, on stands now. We’ve unveiled the best albums and songs of the decade, and now our political expert Matt Taibbi reveals what he was spinning in the 2000s:
I was one of those irritating suburban white kids who listened to hip-hop in the Eighties and instead of growing out of it, I just got old and square and stopped listening to music altogether, right around the time I started working full-time for the world’s leading music magazine. I also stopped doing hard drugs right around the time I joined Rolling Stone, and not coincidentally I no longer work to endlessly repeating CDs like N.W.A’s Greatest Hits and Paul’s Boutique for 30 and 40 hours at a time. Now the only background noise when I work is my own hair falling out. These are the last five CDs I bought this decade:
1. Ben Folds, Songs For Silverman: A friend of mine sent me a link to the hilarious Folds version of “Bitches Ain’t Shit” and I have listened to that song at least 4,000 times since 2006.
2. Fabolous, Real Talk: An impulse buy from the last bag of speed I ever bought. Had a hideous comedown while listening to “Tit 4 Tat” and “Don’t Stop Won’t Stop” over and over that led me to quit drugs. Still have a Pavlovian depressive response to Fabolous songs.
3. G-Unit, Beg For Mercy: I actually bought all the 50 Cent albums before I found out that was lame. Had to ask a friend if listening to “Ayo Technology” with Justin Timberlake makes me gay.
4. A Tribe Called Quest, The Anthology: I love “I Left my wallet in El Segundo.”
5. Soundtrack, Lost Highway: Love the Rammstein song and the Marilyn Manson version of “I Put a Spell on You.” I also listen to the soundtracks for Office Space, Blade Runner...
