The teaser trailer for the Runaways’ biopic, called simply The Runaways, debuted today on MTV Movies. In its brief 45 seconds, we get a blast of the band’s iconic “Cherry Bomb” and a quick glance of all the principal actresses involved, including New Moon star Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie respectively. Actress Scout Taylor-Compton (as Lita Ford) and Stella Maeve (as drummer Sandy West) round out the casting of the legendary all-girl punk band.
The trailer time-travels to 1975, when after a hint at some early discouragement, the Runaways ride the incoming punk wave to chart-topping success, shattering rock’s glass ceiling along the way. Judging by the trailer, The Runaways will chart the band’s formation to overcoming the odds to the eventual dissolve of the group in 1979.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, The Runaways was directed by music video vet Floria Sigismondi. Actor Michael Shannon, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Revolutionary Road and looks downright terrifying in Werner Herzog’s upcoming My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, will play the role of the Runaways’ producer/songwriter/manager Kim Fowley. Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough also reportedly has a role in the film playing Currie’s twin sister. According to EW, The Runaways will debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
