This year’s MTV Video Music Awards go down on September 13th at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, just a few short blocks from some of the hottest Broadway shows, including the revival of West Side Story (and Rock Daily fave Rock of Ages).
Meet the cast of Rock of Ages
West Side Story is popping up in the promos to this year’s big event, which are always quite amusing — remember last year’s ads with Russell Brand quizzing Britney Spears with a giant elephant literally in the room?
Look back at 2008’s VMAs in photos.
Taylor Swift preps to shoot her own commercial — which will feature the star singing “Tonight” from the musical in a vintage cab — in the clip above, and talks about how pumped she is to be part of this year’s extravaganza: “The VMAs are always a big deal and there’s always a great theme, and I thought last year’s theme was so cool, and I knew they’d come up with something cool this year,” she says. Katy Perry, host Brand, Ne-Yo and Cobra Starship appear in the other ads, each featuring “Tonight” reworked with VMAs-appropriate lyrics by In the Heights‘ Lin-Manuel Miranda.

As Rolling Stone reported, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are tied for the most VMAs nods this year with nine apiece, while Britney Spears is nipping at their heels with seven. Rock Daily will have full coverage of this year’s awards, so stick with us from now through the big night for photos, interviews, video and more. Gaga, Jay-Z, Green Day, Muse, Swift and Pink are among this year’s VMAs performers.
