The trailer for director Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus debuted today, providing us with a sneak preview of Heath Ledger’s last turn on the big screen. You can watch the trailer above and try to figure out what exactly the film is about, but from a visual standpoint, Imaginarium looks like it shares a lot with Gilliam’s previous beautiful nightmares like Brazil, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and 12 Monkeys, but with a ton more CGI.
In addition to the last big screen performance by Ledger, the film also features Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all sharing the role of Tony, filling in for Ledger after the actor died tragically in January 2008 at the age of 28. The film stars Christopher Plummer as the Doctor of the film’s title as well as one of Rock Daily’s favorite actors/musicians, Tom Waits, who has been cast as the Devil. Judging by the trailer, Waits looks all kinds of sinister portraying Satan with a bowtie and a pencil moustache, almost like a diabolical John Waters. (Gilliam did call Waits a “living god” when Rolling Stone spoke to the director at this year’s Comic-Con.)
See who else was showing off new projects at 2009’s Comic-Con.
“Everybody is basically waiting to see Heath’s last performance,” Gilliam also said at Comic-Con, “but I want you to understand that this film is basically Dr. Parnassus’s film.”Parnassus is out in theaters October 16th. In addition to Ledger’s final performance, as Rock Daily reported, Ledger’s long-awaited animated video for Modest Mouse’s “King Rat” finally debuted last week.
