After a whirlwind three-month romance, Katy Perry and British comic Russell Brand are engaged. Us Weekly broke the initial story that the couple might have gotten engaged over the holiday weekend, writing that Brand popped the question when the two took a trip to Jaipur, India. The “I Kissed a Girl” singer and her VMAs host beau were mum about the engagement until reps confirmed to People that the rumors were true, with Brand telling The Sun, “It’s true. Much love.”
Power Couples: a history of rockers and the actors who love them.
The pair’s romance is actually quite similar to the plot of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the 2008 comedy that introduced Brand to American audiences as a rocker dating an out-of-work actress. In reality, the roles are reversed: Perry is the singer who has an upcoming new album — and likely a subsequent tour — on deck, while Brand is the actor whose schedule opened up after his BBC radio show was canceled last year. According to Us, the couple met when Perry filmed her cameo in the upcoming comedy Get Him to the Greek, a sequel of sorts to Sarah Marshall with Brand reprising his role of Aldous Snow.
Other than Sarah Marshall, Brand is most known to American audiences as the mouthy Englishman who hosted the past two Video Music Awards and whose comments about the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings stirred up some critics. Perry embraced her own controversy back in ‘08 with her hit “I Kissed a Girl.” She was previously involved in a long relationship with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy.
