Saturday, August 29th, would have been Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday, and to mark the occasion, cities around the world celebrated the King of Pop with gatherings honoring Jackson’s musical legacy. One of the most noteworthy tributes took place in Mexico City, where a reported 12,397 — and countless more spectators — gathered to break the world record for the most people to partake in the famed “Thriller” dance at the same time. Video of the feat is below, and while the Mexican mob isn’t as synchronized or fluid as those Philippines prisoners, the mere size of the crowd is staggering.

As Rock Daily reported last week, Spike Lee hosted a tribute to Jackson in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Despite heavy rains, that event attracted about 10,000 people as a DJ filled the park with Jackson’s music. Lee, who directed the video for Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us,” said he hoped to make the “joyous, festive and celebratory” Prospect Park party an annual event.
